Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable customer contact, reliability, availability and a clear interest in retail. Keep claims modest and support them elsewhere in the CV.Open with years of relevant experience, store or department scale, leadership responsibilities and two or three defensible commercial or service outcomes.
Customer evidenceUse examples from placements, volunteering, hospitality, events or education to show listening, helpful communication and confident handling of enquiries.Show how you identified customer needs, handled difficult complaints, built loyalty and improved service across busy shifts or a department.
Sales evidenceMention product explanations, comparisons or linked-product suggestions where these genuinely formed part of the work. Quantify transactions or customers rather than inventing revenue.Connect product advice and sales techniques to targets, conversion, average transaction value or repeat business, using only figures you can verify.
Stock and merchandisingShow accurate replenishment, tidy displays, stock counts and safe handling. Numbers might cover units processed, deliveries or discrepancies found.Demonstrate responsibility for stock availability, loss reduction, merchandising standards and task planning, with the size of the area, team or stock operation.
Team contributionShow dependable handovers, punctual shift coverage and cooperation during busy periods.Include buddying or one-to-one coaching where it was part of the role, plus rota coordination, task allocation or measurable improvements delivered through the team.
CV emphasisGive education, volunteering and transferable experience enough space to compensate for a short employment history.Shorten early roles and devote more space to recent leadership, commercial performance, customer service and stock-control results.

How to write a retail assistant CV

Use reverse-chronological order, starting with your most recent role. A clear one- or two-page CV usually works well: place your contact details first, followed by a short personal statement, core skills, employment history, education and any useful extras. If you apply through an Applicant Tracking System, choose a simple layout with clear headings and standard bullet points. Keep contact details out of headers and footers, avoid graphics and use relevant wording from the advert naturally.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, strongest evidence and the retail role you want
ExperienceEmployer, title, dates and short bullets that connect actions with outcomes
SkillsAbilities that match the advert and appear elsewhere in your evidence
EducationAwarded qualifications, institution names and completion dates
ExtrasRelevant volunteering, languages or interests that add evidence

Keep the personal statement brief; it should set direction rather than repeat the rest of the CV. In employment history, give the greatest space to recent, relevant work. If you lack retail experience, draw on customer contact, teamwork, reliability and handling competing tasks from education, volunteering or another sector. List skills precisely and support them in your experience bullets. Present education concisely, placing it above experience only when it is your strongest selling point.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Customer-focused retail assistant with two years' experience advising shoppers, processing purchases and replenishing fast-moving stock. Regularly supported a busy shop floor serving more than 150 customers per shift and helped the team exceed its weekly sales target in 9 of 12 recent weeks. Seeking a permanent role where careful product advice and calm complaint handling will improve the customer experience.

Too generic

Friendly and hardworking person looking for a retail assistant job. I am good with people, work well alone or in a team and can do any task required. I would like to join a nice company where I can gain more experience.

Writing your experience

Build each bullet around a simple sequence: action, scope and outcome. Start with what you did, add enough context to show the size or difficulty of the task, then state the result. Concrete data can make the evidence easier to judge, but it must come from records or figures you genuinely know. Useful measures might include customers served, transactions processed, delivery size, stock discrepancies, complaint resolution time, sales against a stated target or the number of colleagues supported.

A duty such as "Helped customers" says almost nothing. A stronger version is: "Advised 40–60 customers per shift on product options, contributing to a 12% rise in weekly accessory sales." This shows customer advice, workload and a commercial result.

"Worked on the tills" can become: "Processed an average of 85 card and cash transactions per shift, balancing the till without discrepancies across a three-month period." The revised bullet gives the reader evidence of pace and accuracy.

"Dealt with complaints" can become: "Resolved 18 customer complaints during the Christmas trading period, recording each case and settling 15 at the first point of contact." That wording shows listening, questioning and resolution rather than merely claiming good service.

Use verbs that describe visible work: advised, served, processed, replenished, checked, organised, resolved, compared, explained, trained and coordinated. Vary them only when the action changes; forced synonyms make bullets harder to read. Include experience of electronic tills and stock systems when it is true, particularly if the advert mentions them.

Choose three or four bullets for each recent role. Put the most relevant result first, and cut routine tasks that add no evidence. Older or unrelated jobs can be shorter, but retain transferable examples such as helping customers, managing queues or working accurately under time pressure. Before sending the CV, compare every bullet with the advert and any person specification. Mirror relevant terminology without copying whole sentences, and make sure each claimed skill has an example somewhere on the page.

Education & certifications

Retail assistant vacancies do not all follow one qualification route, so present what you have without suggesting that one credential is universal. Give each awarded qualification its exact title, the school or provider, and the completion year. Recent applicants can add one short note on relevant coursework, a shop-based project or dependable attendance when it supplies useful evidence; experienced applicants can keep this section compact.

Retailer (Level 2) is an approved technical education product, and Retailer (level 2) apprenticeship vacancies appear in the UK retail market. Treat this as an optional route, not a condition for every retail assistant job. If you have completed it, record the exact awarded title and provider. If you are still studying, state the expected completion date plainly rather than implying that it has already been awarded.

Other entry routes may be practical. Weekend or seasonal work can provide experience before an application for a permanent post, while charity-shop volunteering can build customer-service and retail skills that may support a move into paid work. Record either under experience or volunteering with dates and evidence of what you actually did.

Employer criteria must remain tied to the vacancy that states them. For the Countryside Trust Retail Assistant role, Basic literacy and numeracy are essential, while Previous retail experience is desirable. That does not make either wording a universal rule for retail work. Read each advert and person specification carefully, then show the requested evidence without upgrading a preference into a requirement.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing duties such as "served customers" without showing the size, pace or result of the work.

InsteadStart with a clear verb, add the scope and finish with a defensible result, such as the number of customers helped, till accuracy achieved or stock processed.

  • AvoidUsing one generic retail assistant CV for every vacancy.

InsteadRead the advert and any person specification, then mirror relevant language where it truthfully matches your experience. Give most space to the skills and evidence that the vacancy asks for.

  • AvoidClaiming to be good with customers without giving evidence.

InsteadUse a brief example of identifying a customer's needs, explaining products, answering a query or resolving a complaint. State what happened afterwards when you have a figure you can defend.

  • AvoidIgnoring stock work because the CV focuses only on the till.

InsteadInclude relevant evidence of replenishment, product presentation, stock availability, stock control or safe stock movement. This shows that you understand the shop floor as well as the checkout.

  • AvoidPacking the CV with graphics, columns or contact details inside the header or footer when applying online.

InsteadFor an application submitted through an Applicant Tracking System, use clear headings, plain text and standard bullet points. Keep contact details in the main document and use relevant wording from the job description.

  • AvoidAdding impressive-sounding percentages that cannot be checked or explained.

InsteadUse only figures you can defend. If you do not have sales data, quantify honest scope instead, such as shift frequency, deliveries processed, customers assisted or colleagues supported.
