How to write a sales manager CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological format and keep the finished CV focused, usually within two pages. Start with a crisp, readable header containing your name, email address and best mobile number. Follow it with a personal statement, employment history, skills and education. Add relevant accolades or certifications only when they strengthen your application.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, sales setting, strongest commercial evidence and target role
ExperienceRecent roles, results against targets, account scope, team size and improvements you influenced
SkillsCapabilities drawn from the advert that your experience can prove
EducationQualifications listed clearly, with recent or relevant study receiving the most space
ExtrasRelevant awards, professional development or languages that add useful evidence

Open with a short personal statement tailored to the vacancy. In employment history, begin each bullet with an action and connect it to a measurable result where possible. Keep the skills section selective rather than filling it with generic claims. Experienced candidates can present education briefly, while applicants near the start of their career can give relevant study more room.

Read the job listing closely and reuse its exact keywords only when they accurately describe your background. Adjust the tone and emphasis to suit the target company. In general, prioritise relevant work from the past ten years and compress older positions if they merely provide context.

Proofread the final CV before submitting it. Avoidable errors undermine the careful, credible impression a sales manager needs to convey.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Sales manager with seven years' experience in business-to-business sales, including three years leading a regional team of eight. Increased annual territory revenue by 14% and improved target attainment from 76% to 93% through weekly pipeline reviews, focused coaching and clearer account plans. Seeking a role where disciplined forecasting, team development and consultative selling can support profitable growth.

Too generic

Hard-working sales manager looking for a new challenge. I am a people person with excellent communication skills and a passion for sales. I work well alone or in a team and always try to achieve good results.

Writing your experience

Sales management bullets work best when they connect an action, its scope and the commercial outcome. Instead of listing routine duties, explain what changed because of your decisions. Useful evidence might include performance against target, revenue growth, conversion rate, retained accounts, pipeline value, forecast accuracy, sales-cycle length or the number of people coached. Use only figures supported by your records.

Too vagueStronger version
Managed the sales teamCoached a team of seven through fortnightly deal reviews, raising the proportion reaching quarterly target from 57% to 86%
Looked after important customersIntroduced account plans for 24 priority clients, contributing to a 12% rise in renewal revenue over one year
Found new business opportunitiesResearched two underserved customer segments and converted 18 qualified prospects, adding £210,000 to the annual pipeline

The stronger versions explain the intervention instead of attaching a number to a duty. They also give the reader enough context to judge scale. If revenue is confidential, use a defensible percentage, ranking, volume, time saving or movement against target.

Choose verbs that describe the work precisely: coached, negotiated, converted, retained, forecast, analysed, expanded, introduced, improved, secured and supervised. Sales managers commonly guide sales strategy, develop staff, review performance against goals and coach representatives individually, so the section should contain evidence of both selling and leadership. Depending on the vacancy, useful examples could also cover identifying prospects, supporting client relationships, analysing sales options, researching opportunities and preparing concise performance reports.

Give the newest and most relevant role the most detail, then shorten older entries. Three or four substantial bullets usually read better than a long inventory. Match the evidence to the vacancy: a team leadership post calls for coaching and performance results, whereas a regional growth role may place more weight on territory development, prospecting and account relationships. If you are moving up from an individual contributor role, see this sales CV example.

Education & certifications

For direct applications to UK sales manager roles, applicants need sales experience and a record of achieving targets. Employers often consider sales and management experience, market knowledge and track record more important than academic qualifications, so place education after employment history once your career evidence is established. List each qualification in reverse-chronological order with the institution, subject and completion year. Give little space to old or unrelated study.

Sales supervisors or assistant managers can optionally complete professional qualifications while working to support progression into sales management. Relevant programmes may cover market research, sales planning, managing team performance and strategic sales leadership. Name a certification only if you hold it, reproduce its title accurately and include the issuer where applicable. Relevant accolades or certifications can have a separate section when they add genuine evidence.

For specialist sales management jobs, a background in designing or manufacturing the products sold by the team may strengthen an application. Make that connection explicit through your education or experience rather than assuming the reader will infer it.

The UK occupation reference classifies sales manager as a Level 4 - Higher Technical Occupation and records a potential occupational standard, with no development group yet formed, rather than a completed standard. This is classification context, not a credential to claim. Tailor the section to the application route and vacancy; optional professional development should not be presented as a universal entry condition.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing duties without showing commercial results, such as revenue won, target attainment, conversion gains or pipeline growth.

InsteadTurn each relevant duty into an outcome-led bullet. Add figures only when you can defend them, stating the action, scale and result.

  • AvoidSending the same generic sales manager CV to every industry and employer.

InsteadMatch the CV to the advertised role. Use the employer's wording where it truthfully describes your experience, and demonstrate knowledge of that industry's sales process.

  • AvoidWriting "managed the sales team" without explaining the leadership work or its effect.

InsteadState the team size, how you reviewed results or coached colleagues, and what changed. Use verified figures to show improvements in performance.

  • AvoidGiving old or unrelated positions as much space as recent sales leadership work.

InsteadIn general, concentrate the detailed work history on relevant roles from the last 10 years. Condense earlier positions unless they strengthen your application.

  • AvoidBurying contact details in a decorative or cluttered header.

InsteadUse a crisp, readable header that makes your name, email address and best phone number easy to find.

  • AvoidSubmitting a CV with spelling errors, inconsistent dates or contradictory sales figures.

InsteadProofread the finished CV before submission. Check every date, percentage, target and monetary figure against records you can produce.
