Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable experience in customer service, operations, analysis or project support, then connect it to dependable service delivery.Open with the scale of your service ownership, leadership remit, client responsibility and strongest measurable service outcomes.
Service performance evidenceShow accurate monitoring, reporting and follow-up on incidents, requests or agreed service measures.Show ownership of service-level agreements, performance reviews, corrective plans and measurable improvements across several services or client accounts.
Incident and improvement workDescribe how you supported incident coordination, kept records accurate and helped operational teams restore service.Demonstrate leadership during serious incidents, analysis of recurring problems and changes that reduced incident rates or improved service access and functionality.
Stakeholder scopeUse examples involving customers, colleagues and a small number of operational teams.Include clients, governance meetings, suppliers, partners and cross-functional teams, with evidence of decisions, escalations and negotiated agreement.
Governance and reportingShow concise reporting, dependable meeting preparation and accurate tracking of actions.Show that you initiated or led service reviews, represented the service function and supplied reports and advice that informed decisions.
Process ownershipEvidence consistent use of established incident, change and service procedures.Evidence the design, implementation, ownership and adoption of service-management processes, together with quality-assurance or audit oversight.

How to write a service delivery manager CV

Use reverse-chronological order when your employment history demonstrates relevant experience and progression. A combination format can suit a move from operations, IT support or project delivery because it gives transferable skills more space while preserving a clear employment timeline. Keep the design restrained, with familiar headings, consistent dates and a readable typeface. Most applicants can aim for two pages, but relevant evidence matters more than squeezing useful detail into an arbitrary limit. A UK CV does not need a photo or date of birth.

Put the evidence in the right order

Arrange the main sections as personal statement, key skills, professional experience in most-recent-first order, certifications, education and additional information where relevant. This order gives the reader a quick account of your fit before they examine the supporting detail.

Write a personal statement of three or four sentences. Mention your level, the service setting you know and one or two outcomes that match the vacancy. Evidence of SLA compliance, service-management processes and client satisfaction belongs near the top when it is accurate. Replace claims such as "excellent manager" with a specific improvement, responsibility or scale.

Choose 10 to 15 key skills that match the advert and are proved elsewhere in the CV. Incident management, stakeholder engagement, project delivery and analytical skills are useful terms for this role. Name JIRA or Power BI only when the vacancy calls for them and you have used them. Borrow accurate terminology from the advert, but write about your own work rather than copying its sentences.

Give the most space to recent, relevant employment. Add enough context beneath each job title to establish the service environment, then use concise achievement bullets. Useful evidence may cover service quality, client escalations, SLA performance, incident management, problem resolution or change control. Routine administration can be reduced to a short line unless it is central to the post.

SectionWhat the reader needs
Personal statementLevel, service setting and credible outcomes
Key skillsVacancy-matched capabilities supported by evidence
ExperienceOwnership, scope, action and measured results
Certifications and educationExact titles, institutions and dates
Additional informationDetails that directly strengthen the application

With limited direct experience, use placements, operational support, customer-facing work and assessed projects. Explain the delivery problem, what you personally did and what changed. A senior CV needs more evidence of leadership, governance, service scale and improvements maintained over time.

Use extra sections sparingly. Languages, volunteering and professional activity deserve space only when they add relevant evidence. Before submitting, check dates, terminology and formatting against the vacancy. Verify every figure against records or an explanation you could confidently give at interview.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Service Delivery Manager with seven years' experience overseeing business-critical support services and client relationships. Improved SLA attainment from 91% to 97% across a 14-client portfolio by tightening escalation reviews and assigning clear owners to recurring problems. Leads service reviews, coordinates operational teams and turns performance data into agreed improvement plans. Gives clients clear, candid updates when services fall short.

Too generic

Hard-working Service Delivery Manager looking for a new challenge. I have excellent communication and management skills and can work well alone or in a team. I am responsible, organised and always give 100%.

Writing your experience

Each bullet should reveal what changed because of your work. A dependable structure is action + service scope + result + metric. Scope could mean the number of clients, services, sites, suppliers, users or team members involved. Results might include stronger SLA attainment, fewer repeat incidents, quicker restoration or better client satisfaction, but only when the outcome is accurate and traceable to your contribution.

Put the result first when it carries the most weight:

BeforeAfter
Responsible for monthly service reviews.Raised SLA attainment from 92% to 97% across eight client accounts by introducing monthly exception reviews and named action owners.
Helped with major incidents.Coordinated 24 major-incident responses, cutting average restoration time from 96 to 68 minutes through clearer escalation routes.
Produced performance reports.Rebuilt the weekly service dashboard, saving six preparation hours and giving five account leads a consistent view of risks and overdue actions.

The stronger versions connect an intervention with its scope and outcome. They also make the candidate's own contribution easy to see. Do not force a percentage into every line. A believable mixture of volumes, time measures and observable results reads better than a page of suspiciously neat improvements.

Select examples for the post in front of you. For a client-led role, discuss service reviews, escalations, satisfaction and communication between providers and customers. For an IT service post, describe SLA analysis, incident management, problem resolution and change control where they match your experience. Senior evidence can cover convening service or client meetings, reporting to decision-makers, reviewing quality or audit outputs and coordinating operational action.

Use verbs that expose the work: improved, reduced, restored, resolved, negotiated, coordinated, implemented, analysed, standardised, chaired and reported. "Managed" is appropriate when you held genuine accountability, but it becomes vague when repeated. Name the service, team or process, show its scale and say what happened next.

Interrogate every bullet before keeping it. Is your action clear? Can the reader see the scale? Could you explain the result at interview? Where a wider team produced the outcome, describe your part rather than taking credit for all of it. Keep ordinary duties brief and reserve space for recoveries, changes and improvements that endured.

Education & certifications

List each qualification with its exact title, institution or awarding body, and completion year. Put the newest or most relevant study first. If a vacancy names a role-specific qualification, reproduce the title accurately instead of shortening it or substituting a similar credential. Early-career applicants can add one brief note about a placement or assessed project when it provides relevant delivery evidence. Experienced applicants can usually limit older education entries to the main details.

Requirements differ between employers and grades. For one Service Delivery Manager Grade 7 role, degree-level education in a relevant discipline with a professional qualification is essential, although substantial experience in a related field may be accepted instead. That particular role also treats a level 3 service management framework qualification and ITIL Intermediate Lifecycle Module in Service Operation as essential. ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle Qualification (Expert) is advantageous for the same role rather than essential. Keep all of these conditions tied to that Grade 7 vacancy; they are not universal entry requirements for service delivery management.

Copy the official title of every completed credential and state the completion date. Label ongoing study clearly and add the expected completion date. Separating completed qualifications from courses in progress prevents the reader from mistaking one for the other. Do not state that experience is formally equivalent to a qualification unless the relevant vacancy expressly offers that alternative.

If an advert requests a credential you do not hold, do not blur the gap with the name of a related course. Present your relevant experience honestly and allow the employer to assess it. Omit incomplete or unrelated training unless you can state its status and relevance plainly. Test manager CV guidance can help you identify relevant technology delivery qualifications.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing service delivery duties without showing whether service quality, efficiency or customer outcomes improved.

InsteadTurn each duty into an outcome-led bullet. State the service or client scope, the action taken and a figure you can defend, such as SLA attainment, incident volume, response time or satisfaction.

  • AvoidClaiming to manage service-level agreements without giving evidence of performance reviews, issue identification or corrective action.

InsteadShow the sequence: reviewed performance against agreed service levels, found the cause of a shortfall, agreed a change and measured the result. Use only figures supported by your records.

  • AvoidTreating incident management as a count of tickets closed rather than evidence of restored service and reduced recurrence.

InsteadExplain your role during incidents, the teams you coordinated and the effect on service. Add a separate problem-resolution example when investigation or improvement work reduced repeat incidents.

  • AvoidWriting vaguely about being good with customers and stakeholders.

InsteadName the relationship and situation, such as a client escalation, supplier review, service meeting or difficult feedback cycle. State what you communicated or agreed and what changed afterwards.

  • AvoidMentioning reports or dashboards without explaining the decision they supported.

InsteadConnect analysis to action. Show how a performance trend led to a process change, corrective plan or service improvement, then give the measured result.

  • AvoidUsing the same evidence for junior and senior applications.

InsteadFor an early-career CV, stress transferable coordination, analysis and customer-facing evidence. For a senior post, foreground service ownership, governance, leadership, scale and results across teams, clients or suppliers.
