How to write a social worker CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological social worker CV template, placing your latest employment and education first. Two pages is a sensible target for many applicants, although relevance and readability matter more than forcing the document into an arbitrary limit. Choose straightforward headings, consistent dates and restrained formatting. Leave out your photograph and date of birth.

SectionWhat earns its place
HeaderName, UK location, mobile number, professional email and profile URL
Personal statementTarget role, relevant strengths and brief evidence of impact
Employment historyTitles, employers, dates and achievement-led bullets
SkillsA selective mix of technical practice and interpersonal strengths
EducationMost recent education first, followed by relevant training
ExtrasVolunteering, languages or professional activity that supports the application

Prepare and tailor the draft

Build a master CV containing your full work history, skills, education, training and certifications. Duplicate it for each application, read the vacancy carefully and retain the evidence that matches its priorities. This gives you a focused application without losing useful material that may suit another post.

Write the personal statement after drafting the other sections. In three or four lines, identify your level, relevant setting and strongest evidence. Connect qualities such as empathy and communication to something you have done. A phrase such as "calm communicator" becomes credible when the employment section describes difficult conversations, coordinated reviews or sustained client engagement.

Give recent, relevant employment the most space. Each bullet should explain your action, the scope and the result. Assessment volumes, scheduled-review completion, referral times and service engagement can clarify scale when you have reliable records. If no suitable number exists, describe complexity, frequency or the practical outcome plainly.

Keep the skills section selective. Case management can appear as a technical skill, while critical thinking, active listening, empathy and communication should also be demonstrated through the personal statement and employment history. List education and job-specific training in reverse-chronological order. Include extras only when they add evidence the core sections cannot, such as relevant voluntary work or useful language ability.

A social worker CV sample is most useful as a guide to structure and tone. Do not copy its claims or figures. Adapt the social worker CV template to your own setting, level and evidence, and check that every statement could be explained at interview.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Social work practitioner with five years' experience supporting adults and families through needs reviews, support planning and coordinated casework. Managed a varied caseload while maintaining accurate records and working with health professionals, community services and families, completing 96% of scheduled reviews by their agreed dates last year. Known for calm communication, careful professional judgement and practical, person-centred support during difficult conversations.

Too generic

Hard-working and caring social worker looking for a new challenge. I am a people person with excellent communication skills and can work alone or in a team. I am passionate about helping everyone and would be an asset to any organisation.

Writing your experience

Employment bullets should let a hiring manager see what you did, the responsibility involved and the result. Use a simple pattern: action + scope or challenge + outcome. Begin with a precise verb, add enough context to establish scale, then finish with a result you can verify.

Social work experience may include meeting individuals and families to review their needs and make support plans. Practitioners may give emotional and practical support, help clients maintain independent living skills, keep accurate records, write reports and review cases with supervisors. Work can also involve communities, health professionals and other agencies. Treat these responsibilities as prompts rather than ready-made bullets. Select the work relevant to the vacancy and explain your own contribution. If your work centres on day-to-day care rather than social work responsibilities, the health care assistant CV guide may be a closer fit.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for client assessmentsCompleted 42 scheduled needs reviews in six months and recorded agreed support plans within two working days in 95% of cases
Worked with other agenciesCoordinated fortnightly discussions with four partner services, cutting overdue agreed actions from 18 to 6 during one quarter
Supported young peopleMaintained planned contact with 14 young people and helped raise attendance at wellbeing sessions from 61% to 82%

The revised versions establish volume, pace or change. They also avoid pretending that one practitioner controlled a shared result. Use "contributed to", "supported" or "coordinated" when several people or agencies affected the outcome. Reserve "delivered", "increased" and "reduced" for results your records support.

Useful action verbs include assessed, reviewed, planned, coordinated, recorded, prepared, supported, referred, advocated, monitored, mentored and escalated. Match the verb to what you actually did. When work involved client safety, describe your professional response without revealing identities or case details. For example: "Recognised a change in risk during a visit, followed the agreed protective process and secured a same-day review with partner services." Social workers may need to act to protect clients, but the CV should report the judgement and response, never confidential circumstances.

Evidence from work with young people can cover trust built through consistent contact and the resulting change in engagement or access to wellbeing support. Partnership examples can state the type and number of services involved without identifying clients. Record-keeping bullets might show report volumes, completion times or audit outcomes.

At senior level, give more space to complexity and team effect. Senior practitioners may manage complex cases or mentor new staff, while practice supervisors or service managers may support a team of social workers. For example: "Mentored five newly appointed practitioners through monthly case reviews, with all five completing planned induction milestones on time." The detail shows the group, cadence and outcome.

Use numbers when they clarify caseload size, review volume, timeliness, attendance, audit findings or staff supported. Never estimate, embellish or claim a shared team result as solely your own. When a figure could identify someone, or reliable data is unavailable, state the frequency, scope and result without a number.

Education & certifications

List education and training in reverse-chronological order. Give the exact qualification, institution and completion year. Add selected placements, modules or project work only when they strengthen the application. Recent graduates can devote more space to placements and transferable evidence, while experienced applicants can let recent practice lead.

The title "social worker" is protected in law across the UK. Qualification and registration routes differ by jurisdiction, so describe only the route that applies to you. Do not present the rules for one UK nation as though they apply everywhere.

The grounding identifies an undergraduate Degree in Social Work and a post graduate Masters in Social Work as routes to qualification in the UK. In Northern Ireland, the stated route is an Honours Degree in Social Work. Copy the exact award title from your documents rather than replacing it with a loose description.

In Scotland, an accepted social work qualification must be achieved before applying to register as a social worker. Registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) is required there to use the title social worker. An applicant with an international social work qualification may have that international social work qualification assessed against SSSC criteria and standards when applying for registration in Scotland. The international social work qualification cannot be assessed until the applicant is able to register, which requires residence in Scotland.

Internationally Qualified Social Workers applying for registration with the Social Care Council must have English language skills. This wording applies to that stated registration route and should not be broadened into a rule for every international applicant.

For a Social Worker apprenticeship application, include GCSEs where relevant. Put job-specific training beneath formal education or in a separate training section, giving the provider and completion date. Record exactly what you completed. Do not present attendance on a short course as a professional credential when none was awarded.

Some posts have additional conditions. Only registered social workers with additional appropriate qualifications may carry out the duties of a Mental Health Officer / Approved Mental Health Professional as set out in legislation. Only a registered social worker may carry out the Chief Social Work Officer role. Include either route only when it is relevant to the vacancy and supported by your records.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing duties without showing the result for the person, family or service.

InsteadTurn each duty into evidence: state the action, the scale of the work and a defensible outcome. Use only figures you can verify.

  • AvoidWriting a generic social worker personal statement that could belong to any caring profession.

InsteadName your area of practice, strongest transferable or professional skills and the contribution you can make. Keep the wording concise and specific.

  • AvoidTreating empathy as a claim rather than showing it through practice.

InsteadDemonstrate it with evidence of active listening, relationship building, adaptive communication or involving people's views in support planning.

  • AvoidMentioning safeguarding without explaining the judgement or action involved.

InsteadDescribe how you recognised risk, recorded concerns, sought advice or contributed to protective action. Leave out confidential details.

  • AvoidLeaving case records, reports and supervision off the CV because they sound administrative.

InsteadInclude evidence of accurate records, timely reports and constructive case reviews. State the scope and outcome where you can.

  • AvoidUsing the same evidence for junior and senior applications.

InsteadFor junior posts, foreground placements, education and transferable evidence. For senior posts, show complex casework, mentoring, professional judgement and support for colleagues.
