How to write a technician CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological layout so a reader can quickly find your dates, job titles and technical evidence. Two pages is a sensible target for most applicants; an early-career candidate may have enough relevant material for one full page. Put your contact details first, followed by your personal statement, skills, employment history, education and relevant additional information.

Build the CV around evidence

Open with a personal statement of two or three sentences tailored to the vacancy. State the kind of technician work you know, the setting in which you have done it and a responsibility or result that gives the claim weight. If you are new to the field, draw on workshop projects, supervised training, practical study or transferable experience. Keep the paragraph specific without cramming it with tools and keywords.

List employment in reverse-chronological order. Give recent, relevant positions more space than older work and use three to five bullets for each substantial role. A useful bullet starts with a decisive verb, explains the task or problem and ends with a measurable effect. Figures might cover response time, downtime, asset volume, completion rate, repeat faults or cost, provided you can explain where each number came from.

Keep the skills section selective. Match the vacancy's wording when it accurately describes your experience, then prove your strongest abilities in the employment section. A claim about fault diagnosis carries more weight when a later bullet identifies the equipment, symptom, action, test and operational result. Distinguish between independent competence, supervised practice and limited exposure.

Education entries should show the exact awarded title, provider and completion year. Label ongoing study clearly and add the expected completion date. Where practical projects provide your best evidence, include a concise line about the equipment, task and result rather than listing every module.

Additional sections need a clear purpose. A relevant licence, project, language, volunteering role or record of professional development may help, particularly when paid experience is limited. Leave out a photograph, date of birth, full street address and references on a standard British CV. Your city or region, professional email address, UK mobile number and an optional professional profile link are enough.

Finish by checking dates, tense and terminology against the vacancy. Use present tense for current duties and past tense for completed work. Save the document with a clear filename, then inspect the exported copy to ensure headings, dates and bullets have not moved between pages.

Writing your experience

Treat each experience bullet as a small piece of proof. Start with what you changed or solved, add enough context to show the scale or difficulty, then give the result. A dependable structure is: action + task or scope + measurable outcome.

The revised bullets explain what happened, how much work was involved and why it mattered. They also avoid claiming sole credit for a team result. If several people delivered an improvement, use "contributed to" and state your part.

Choose measures that fit the work. Useful evidence may include the number of assets or jobs, response time, planned-work completion, repeat call-outs, downtime, parts usage or inspection findings. Do not force a percentage into every line. "Maintained 28 pumps across two production areas" gives useful scale without a dramatic improvement figure.

Strong opening verbs include diagnosed, repaired, inspected, tested, restored, replaced, serviced, recorded, prioritised, coordinated and reduced. Vary them because the work varied, not simply to avoid repetition. Keep most bullets to one or two lines and put the best evidence first beneath each role.

Engineering maintenance technicians commonly maintain plant, equipment and systems through planned, preventative and reactive maintenance, including breakdown response. Their work also covers job preparation, safe completion, job closure and work records. Show that full cycle where relevant: for example, describe how you reviewed the job, obtained parts, diagnosed the fault, completed the repair, tested operation and recorded the outcome.

Tailor the diagnostic detail to the environment. For work involving tools, dies, jigs or fixtures, complex fault diagnosis may cover mechanical, fluid and pneumatic, electrical and electronic, or process-control equipment when applicable. State the symptom, readings or observations you used, the component or system you addressed and how you confirmed correct operation. Facilities candidates can use similarly concrete examples for building faults, plumbing repairs, plant alarms or remedial work; HVAC technician roles often involve the same kind of fault-finding.

Some vacancies demand evidence beyond routine repair. For the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Maintenance Technician role, applicants should evidence building-maintenance fault-finding, diagnostic and remedial work, plant-state monitoring and alarm interpretation, plumbing knowledge and experience using power equipment. The same vacancy asks for evidence of handling reasonable loads and working at height with ladders and tower scaffolding. These points are specific to that role, so use them only when applying to a vacancy with those stated needs and only when they reflect your real experience.

List qualifications in reverse-chronological order. Give the award's exact title, followed by the school, college or training provider and completion year. Do not shorten a title so much that its level or subject becomes unclear. For ongoing study, put "Expected" before the completion year rather than presenting an unfinished programme as an awarded qualification.

Several optional UK routes relate specifically to electronics engineering technician work. The Engineering and Manufacturing Level 2 Foundation Apprenticeship and Engineering Technician Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship are possible trainee-entry routes. No specific qualifications or experience are usually needed when applying for a foundation apprenticeship. An advanced apprenticeship usually requires 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths. These are route-specific application rules, not general conditions for every technician vacancy.

The Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship may suit someone pursuing service and repair work on production-line machinery or robotics. Optional college routes for electronics engineering technician work include the T Level in Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing and the T Level in Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing. A T Level requires 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths. Keep that requirement attached to the T Level application route rather than presenting it as a general employment threshold.

An engineering maintenance technician apprentice following the core and options apprenticeship must be trained and assessed against the core and one option. On a CV, record the completed route precisely. If it is still under way, state its status and expected completion date.

EngTech status is an optional progression route for experienced electronics engineering technicians and can demonstrate industry skills and expertise. If you hold it, record the exact status in a separate credentials section; if you are only working towards it, make that distinction clear.

Employer criteria can differ. For the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Maintenance Technician role, an applicant must evidence a relevant trade qualification, equivalent experience, or having served an electrical, mechanical or plumbing apprenticeship. A City and Guild relevant trade qualification is one accepted example for that vacancy. Experience in a higher education environment is preferred for the role, rather than required.

That application also calls for a CV, a supporting letter showing how the applicant meets the person specification and details of two referees. Treat those as instructions for that named application, not as a standard CV format. The supporting letter is the place to connect each criterion to concise evidence, while the CV should retain a readable employment history and qualification record.

If your background does not follow a named route, make equivalent experience easy to assess. Pair education or training with brief evidence of practical projects, equipment used or supervised workplace work. Remove unrelated certificates when they crowd out stronger material, and use vacancy wording only when it accurately matches qualifications or experience you hold.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Listing duties such as "carried out maintenance" without naming the equipment, fault or result.

    Give each bullet a clear job and outcome. Identify the asset, explain what you did and add a figure you can defend, such as downtime reduced, jobs closed or repeat faults avoided.

  • Treating planned and reactive maintenance as one undifferentiated type of experience.

    Separate scheduled servicing from breakdown response. This lets the reader see your routine asset-care experience as well as how you respond when equipment develops a fault or stops.

  • Leaving safe working and maintenance records out of the technician CV.

    Show how you reviewed job requirements, followed the relevant safe system of work or permit, completed the task to the expected standard and closed the job with accurate records.

  • Using the same technical skills list for every industrial or facilities vacancy.

    Match the list to the advertised setting. Retain mechanical, electrical, plumbing, plant-monitoring, pneumatic or process-control terms only when they reflect work you have genuinely completed.

  • Claiming broad diagnostic competence without showing how a repair was checked.

    Name the symptom, tests, diagnosis and remedy, then state how you confirmed correct operation. For complex work, distinguish your own contribution from help provided by colleagues.

  • Omitting practical constraints and vacancy-specific application evidence.

    Where the advert asks for it, include defensible examples of power-equipment use, work at height, drawings and technical specifications, load handling or supporting application documents. Address the exact criteria instead of relying on a generic technician CV.
