Preparation for an aged care interview goes beyond rehearsing answers. You need to understand the organisation's values, reflect on your own experiences, and be ready to demonstrate empathy, judgment, and a commitment to person-centred care.
Research the organisation
Know the mission, vision, and values of the care provider. If they emphasise person-centred care, be ready to explain what that means to you. Look for recent news, awards, or quality ratings. Understand the resident demographic and the type of care provided (residential, dementia-specific, palliative, domiciliary).
Understand current sector issues
Brush up on the Aged Care Quality Standards, workforce challenges, and the shift toward person-centred care. Being able to speak to these issues shows you are informed and engaged with the evolving landscape of aged care.
Prepare your examples
Think through real situations where you demonstrated empathy, handled conflict, prioritised tasks under pressure, or advocated for someone's dignity. If you are new to care, draw on experiences from volunteering, family caring, hospitality, or any role where you supported vulnerable people.
Practice scenario reasoning
Scenario questions do not have rehearsed answers. Practice talking through your reasoning step-by-step: what you would do first, why, and how you would balance competing priorities. Focus on the resident's safety and dignity, and show awareness of when to escalate.
