Use a reverse-chronological format, starting with your current or most recent position. An entry-level resume can often fit on one page. A senior scientist can use a second page when it earns its space through relevant projects, leadership, publications, or specialized methods. Keep the layout plain, use consistent dates, and leave enough white space for quick scanning.

Treat the job posting as an editing brief. Repeat its terminology where it truthfully describes your background, but do not pack the page with disconnected keywords. Give the most space to recent, relevant work. Earlier roles can be shorter, especially when they repeat the same techniques.

Applicants to that same vacancy also have to state each relevant job's work schedule, weekly hours, employment dates, and duties. These instructions belong to that specific federal application, so check every posting rather than treating them as universal resume rules.

Writing your experience

Treat each experience bullet as a compact research record. Name the action, establish the scope, and finish with an outcome or defensible measurement. Scope might mean samples processed, studies completed, datasets reviewed, people supervised, turnaround time, error rate, budget, or project duration. If no business result exists, quantify the work itself and explain why it mattered.

Relevant evidence can also cover careful documentation of experimental processes, outcomes, and analysis. A strong bullet can show how you communicated in reports and presentations for technical and nontechnical audiences. Use this pattern: action + scientific scope + measured outcome. The result does not need to be dramatic. A shorter processing time, fewer repeat runs, better completion rate, or documented body of work can make the contribution concrete.

The figures are illustrative; replace them with numbers you can defend. Keep enough context for a reader outside your specialty to understand the result. "Improved accuracy by 9%" is incomplete unless the bullet identifies what became more accurate and how you measured it.

Choose precise verbs such as designed, executed, validated, analyzed, interpreted, optimized, documented, authored, directed, and mentored. Avoid opening several consecutive bullets with "responsible for." That phrase names an assignment, while a direct verb shows what you did with it.

If you recently graduated, you can include a few relevant courses, research projects, or a capstone. Experienced scientists can usually keep this section shorter.

In the US, chemists and materials scientists typically enter the field with a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related physical science. That is a common route, not a rule for every job. Some positions require a master's degree or PhD plus work experience, so follow the requirements in the posting.

In the US, agricultural and food scientists typically need at least a bachelor's degree in animal science, food science, plant biology, or a related field. Some employers prefer or require a master's or doctoral degree. Again, the posting should guide what you include.

Certifications are optional unless the posting asks for one. Use the credential's exact title and issuer, and add the award date or validity period when relevant. Leave out unrelated training that distracts from stronger scientific evidence.
