Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the position and give one precise reason for choosing the employer. Follow that with the strongest relevant qualification, project or achievement you can prove. Use a named recipient when you know the name; otherwise, write "Dear Hiring Manager" rather than guessing.

Choose your evidence

Start with the two or three priorities that matter most in the advertisement and employer research. Choose a project or achievement that shows how you used the matching skill, what you did and what changed. Digital marketing evidence might concern campaign delivery, content, analytics, SEO or social tools, but include only work you genuinely completed. Check likely scope and progression separately in the UK digital marketing salary guide.

Build the body

Use a concise opening, two focused body paragraphs and a short closing. The first body paragraph should establish evidence through actions and a result. The second should connect that evidence to the employer's needs. Career changers should explain the reason for the move and bridge prior work to recent preparation. Early-career applicants can use academic, volunteer or personal projects. Internal applicants should state a current achievement and explain how it prepares them for greater responsibility.

Format it

For an online application, omit postal contact blocks when the system already captures those details. Keep the presentation professional and easy to scan. Check the final version for vague language, excessive length, spelling mistakes and grammatical errors before every submission.

Close and sign off

End by stating what you could contribute and expressing interest in a conversation without assuming one will happen. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Put your typed full name on the next line.

03
