Shows clear progression from campaign delivery to strategic leadership, with defensible evidence of budget ownership, team management, channel performance and commercial results.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with relevant study, transferable experience and one or two channels used in projects, placements or volunteering.Lead with strategic scope, leadership responsibility and evidence of acquisition, engagement, retention or conversion outcomes.
Campaign ownershipShow how you delivered defined campaign elements from a brief and worked effectively within a team.Show how you chose the digital strategy, set direction across channels and connected delivery to organisational goals.
MeasurementInclude the metrics you monitored, the basic dashboards you created and what you learnt from the results.Explain how you selected KPIs, interpreted performance across campaigns and turned findings into investment or optimisation decisions.
Channel evidenceGive credible depth in the channels you have actually used, supported by coursework, projects or early employment.Show how several channels worked together, why each was chosen and how you adjusted the mix after reviewing performance.
StakeholdersDemonstrate clear written communication, accurate delivery against instructions and confidence explaining results to immediate colleagues.Demonstrate how you briefed stakeholders, resolved competing priorities and translated digital requirements into an agreed plan.
Results and scaleUse modest, verifiable measures such as traffic, engagement, leads or conversion changes from a clearly defined piece of work.Give context for budget, audience, team or portfolio scale, then show the commercial or organisational result you influenced.

How to write a digital marketing CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological digital marketing CV template and keep the main document to one or two pages. Put your name and contact details first, followed by a personal statement, employment history, skills and education. Add a short extra section only when it strengthens your application, such as a relevant project or portfolio link.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, strongest areas and one defensible result
ExperienceRecent roles or projects, with outcomes rather than task lists
SkillsCapabilities that match the vacancy and appear in your evidence
EducationRelevant study, training and dates
ExtrasSelected projects, volunteering or a portfolio when useful

Write a personal statement of two or three sentences. Name the kind of marketing work you can handle and support it with evidence. Avoid broad claims such as "creative professional" unless the rest of the CV proves them.

List experience with the newest role first. Give each position three or four concise bullets built around an action, its scope and the result. For an entry level digital marketing CV, paid work is not the only usable evidence: university projects, volunteering and self-directed campaigns can demonstrate how you followed a brief, chose a channel and assessed the response.

Keep the skills section selective. Match its wording to the vacancy where it truthfully describes your ability, then show those skills in context elsewhere. Present education briefly unless it is your main source of relevant evidence. Extras earn their place by adding proof, not personality filler.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Digital marketing coordinator with experience delivering email, social and content campaigns for consumer services. Improved landing-page conversion from 3.1% to 4.0% through message testing and clearer calls to action, then built a weekly reporting view that helped the team act on campaign results sooner. Now looking to take ownership of integrated campaigns with a stronger acquisition focus.

Too generic

Hard-working and creative digital marketer with excellent communication skills. I am passionate about social media and want an exciting role where I can grow, learn new things and help a successful company with its marketing.

Writing your experience

Treat each experience bullet as a small piece of evidence. Start with the change you made, add enough scope to make the work understandable, and finish with a measured result. A useful pattern is: action + campaign or audience + method + outcome. The number can describe conversion, engagement, traffic, leads, cost, delivery time or output, but it has to come from a record you can defend.

BeforeAfter
Helped with social media postsPlanned and scheduled a four-week social campaign, lifting average post engagement from 2.4% to 3.2%
Worked on email marketingRewrote and tested three email subject lines, raising open rate from 28% to 34% across 12,000 recipients
Produced campaign reportsCombined weekly channel results into one dashboard, cutting reporting preparation from four hours to 90 minutes

The improved versions work because they tell the reader what changed and how much. They also leave room for sensible interview questions. If a campaign did not produce a clean commercial outcome, use an honest operational measure: the number of assets delivered, turnaround time, test volume, audience size or improvement against the previous period.

Choose verbs that reveal your contribution. "Planned", "built", "wrote", "tested", "analysed", "optimised", "launched", "reported" and "recommended" are clearer than "helped" or "was responsible for". Use "led" only when you genuinely directed the work or people involved.

For junior applications, project evidence can be effective. State the brief, your part in the work and the result without presenting a classroom exercise as commercial employment. At senior level, including when applying for a marketing manager role, show wider scope: strategy selection, budget or channel ownership, team direction, stakeholder decisions and the effect on acquisition, engagement or retention. Do not cram several unrelated outcomes into one bullet. A short, precise claim is easier to trust than a dense line of percentages.

Education & certifications

Keep education in reverse-chronological order. Give the qualification, subject, institution and completion year; add modules or a project only when they provide evidence relevant to the vacancy. If education is your main source of experience, include a compact project note describing the brief, your contribution and a result. Experienced candidates can usually reduce older study to a line or two.

There is no single qualification route covered by this guidance for every digital marketing job. One supported route is the Level 6 Digital Marketer apprenticeship, which includes a Bachelor Degree in Digital Marketing. Individual employers set entry criteria for Digital Marketer apprenticeship applicants, so reproduce the criteria from the vacancy rather than assuming one standard applies everywhere.

For Digital Marketer apprentices without level 2 English and Maths, that level needs to be achieved before the end-point assessment. Keep this condition tied to that apprenticeship route; it is not a general entry rule for all digital marketing roles.

After completing the apprenticeship, candidates may apply for professional registration at associate grade with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Institute of Direct & Digital Marketing or BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT also recognises the apprenticeship for entry onto the register of IT technicians, confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence. These are optional progression routes, not universal CV requirements.

A Masters can help an existing graduate specialise and strengthen their CV, but it remains optional. Whatever route you took, place the most relevant evidence first and spell out unfamiliar course content in plain language.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing channels without showing what happened. A line such as "managed email and social media" gives no sense of audience, purpose or result.

InsteadAdd the campaign aim, your contribution and a defensible measure. For example, state whether the work increased qualified traffic, leads, conversions or engagement, using only figures you can verify.

  • AvoidTreating every campaign as a solo achievement when the work was completed as part of a wider marketing team.

InsteadDescribe your own remit precisely. Say whether you owned a straightforward campaign element, worked from a brief, produced assets, analysed results or recommended the next test.

  • AvoidReporting activity totals as if they were outcomes, such as the number of posts published or emails sent.

InsteadConnect activity to an appropriate KPI. Explain what changed after the work, such as click-through rate, conversion rate, qualified leads or cost per acquisition.

  • AvoidUsing one generic digital marketing CV for roles with different channel priorities.

InsteadMatch the evidence to the vacancy. Move the most relevant channel experience, campaign results and analytical skills towards the top without claiming tools or experience you do not have.

  • AvoidWriting a senior CV that focuses on routine execution but says little about strategy, scale or leadership.

InsteadShow how you selected a strategy for an organisational goal, set measures, directed delivery and used results to make budget or channel decisions.

  • AvoidFilling an entry level digital marketing CV with unsupported claims of expertise.

InsteadUse evidence from study, volunteering, placements or personal projects. State the brief, the work you completed and the measured result, and label project experience honestly.
