How to write a delivery driver CV

A delivery driver CV works best in a simple reverse-chronological format. Keep the layout easy to scan, use clear section headings and leave enough white space between entries. Plain formatting also helps applicant tracking systems read the document. Most candidates should aim for one or two pages, depending on the amount of relevant experience they can show.

SectionWhat to include
Contact detailsName, UK location, mobile number, professional email address and optional profile link
Personal statementA short introduction covering relevant experience, useful strengths and the type of role sought
Employment historyRoles listed newest first, with employer, dates and three to seven focused bullets
SkillsDriving, navigation, customer service and technical abilities that match the vacancy
EducationQualifications listed clearly, with the most recent first
Additional informationRelevant languages, volunteering or interests only when they strengthen the application

Personal statement

Open with two or three sentences tailored to the vacancy. State your level of experience, the types of work you have handled and one or two results or strengths that answer the employer's needs. If you have little direct experience, draw on dependable attendance, customer contact, time-sensitive work or practical responsibility instead.

Experience and skills

List employment in reverse-chronological order. Give each role its own heading and use concise bullets rather than paragraphs. Focus on outcomes: delivery volume, punctuality, route coverage, record accuracy or customer feedback. Keep only defensible figures. In the skills section, mirror relevant wording from the advert where it truthfully describes you, but avoid copying long phrases or adding unrelated abilities.

Education and extras

Show qualifications with the institution and completion date. Put a role-specific qualification or relevant licence near the top if the vacancy asks for it, then keep the fuller detail in this section. Extras are optional and should earn their space by showing something useful about your suitability.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Delivery driver with four years' experience completing multi-drop routes across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Regularly handled up to 75 scheduled stops per shift while maintaining accurate delivery records and courteous customer contact. Now seeking a role where careful route preparation, dependable timekeeping and calm problem-solving can support a busy operation.

Too generic

Hard-working driver looking for a new opportunity. I am friendly, punctual and good at driving. I can work alone or with other people and would be an asset to any company.

Writing your experience

Strong employment bullets tell the reader what you did, the scale involved and what changed because of your work. A useful pattern is: action + scope + result. For example, replace a duty such as "Delivered parcels to customers" with evidence such as "Completed 65 to 80 scheduled stops per shift across two postcode areas, achieving a 97% first-attempt delivery rate over six months." The figure is illustrative; your CV should use only records you can support.

Delivery work can include collecting items from a warehouse or pick-up point, transporting goods between sites or to customers, and loading and unloading items. Other useful evidence may cover route planning, loading in delivery order, customer contact, tracking updates, signatures, mileage, fuel records and undelivered returns. Select the parts that match your actual work rather than turning the section into a generic job description.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for planning routesReordered a 58-stop daily route by postcode, cutting average completion time by 35 minutes
Dealt with customersContacted customers about access issues and revised time windows, reducing failed stops from 11 per week to 6
Updated delivery recordsLogged signatures and delivery outcomes for 70 daily stops with 99% record accuracy during quarterly checks

The revised bullets work because they name an action, show its scale and give a result. If an outcome cannot be expressed as a percentage, use another honest measure: stops per shift, postcode areas covered, items handled, customer issues resolved, discrepancies corrected or time saved. Context matters too. "Completed 40 stops" means more when the bullet explains that the route covered rural addresses or narrow delivery windows.

Useful opening verbs include delivered, collected, loaded, planned, reordered, recorded, verified, contacted, resolved, reduced and trained. Vary them naturally, and reserve "managed" or "led" for work where you genuinely had responsibility for people or operations. Senior candidates should show wider scope through team support, route allocation, service results or process changes. New entrants can use examples from retail, warehouse, hospitality or volunteering when those examples prove punctuality, customer care, safe handling or organised work.

Education & certifications

Keep this section precise: qualification or licence name, provider or school, location if useful, and completion year. Put the newest item first. Do not bury a licence requested in the vacancy beneath unrelated courses, but do not repeat every detail throughout the CV either.

For delivery driver work, a full driving licence is required. Employers recruiting directly for delivery van driver roles commonly expect applicants to hold the correct licence for the vehicle used. State the exact licence you hold without implying that one category covers a vehicle it does not.

Some requirements depend on the vehicle and route. Driving a 7.5-tonne delivery lorry requires a category C1 licence. The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is legally required for people driving lorries professionally, and drivers maintaining that professional entitlement must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years. Keep this information confined to applications where that route applies, such as HGV driver roles.

Two optional entry routes into delivery van driving are the Express Delivery Operative Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship and the Urban Driver Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship. Applicants to an intermediate apprenticeship will usually need some GCSEs, often including English and maths. These are routes into the work, not universal requirements for every delivery vacancy.

If you are applying without direct experience, give more space to recent education, relevant practical training and evidence from other jobs. Experienced candidates can shorten older education entries so that employment results remain prominent. Never claim a named credential until it has been awarded, and copy its title accurately from your records.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing duties without showing delivery results, such as route volume, punctuality or record accuracy.

InsteadTurn each duty into an evidence-led bullet. State the action, the scale and a figure you can defend, such as deliveries completed, routes covered or records processed.

  • AvoidUsing the same delivery driver CV for every vacancy.

InsteadMatch the personal statement, skills and employment evidence to the advertised vehicle, delivery work and customer needs. Remove unrelated material.

  • AvoidNaming driving skills in a list but giving no evidence of how they were used.

InsteadBriefly introduce relevant driving strengths in the personal statement, then prove them through employment bullets covering routes, hazards, deadlines or vehicle checks.

  • AvoidLeaving tracking systems, handheld devices and delivery records out of the CV.

InsteadInclude the relevant tools and record-keeping tasks you have actually used, then show where they supported accurate tracking, signatures, mileage or fuel records.

  • AvoidUsing dense formatting, decorative graphics or crowded blocks of text.

InsteadChoose a readable font, leave generous white space and use clear section headings so both recruiters and applicant tracking systems can follow the document.

  • AvoidGiving hobbies or references more space than delivery evidence.

InsteadKeep extras brief and optional. Give priority to the personal statement, reverse-chronological work history, relevant skills and role-specific qualification details.
