Why this works

This CV shows clinical depth, team leadership and patient outcomes through specific, defensible evidence rather than a list of routine duties.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with recent clinical training, patient-centred communication and the setting in which practical skills were developed.Lead with breadth of practice, responsibility for patient outcomes, team contribution and evidence of service improvement.
Clinical evidenceUse supervised placements to show periodontal assessment, preventive advice, infection control and accurate record keeping.Show varied caseloads, review of treatment response, risk management and confident handling of more complex care within personal competence.
Achievement bulletsQuantify placement sessions, patients supported, feedback or documented improvement without overstating personal responsibility.Quantify caseload, follow-up outcomes, process improvements and the scale of clinical or team responsibilities.
TeamworkShow reliable handovers, receptiveness to feedback and contribution to care alongside the dental team.Show clear referrals, effective feedback, appropriate delegation and work across dental or wider healthcare teams.
Skills sectionPrioritise practised clinical methods and transferable strengths that can be verified through training or placements.Prioritise deeper periodontal care, treatment review, clinical risk management and team communication, keeping the list relevant to the vacancy.
CV emphasisGive education and placements enough space to compensate for limited paid experience.Keep education concise and devote more space to recent achievements, scope, patient outcomes and leadership evidence.

How to write a dental hygiene CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological format, beginning with your latest employment, placement or qualification. Keep the layout easy to scan, with plain section headings, consistent dates and enough white space between entries. One or two pages is a sensible working length: an early-career applicant may fill one page, while an experienced candidate may need two. Leave out your photo and date of birth, and avoid graphics or elaborate columns that distract from the evidence.

A practical section order is:

SectionWhat belongs there
Contact detailsName, UK location, mobile number, professional email and optional profile link
Personal statementCareer level, relevant strengths, patient-care approach and a specific point of evidence
SkillsA selective mix of technical and interpersonal abilities that the rest of the CV supports
ExperienceEmployment, placements and relevant transferable work, with the newest entry first
EducationExact awarded qualification titles, institutions and dates in reverse-chronological order
Additional informationRelevant development, languages or volunteering that adds useful evidence

Match the vacancy

Read the job description before editing. Give more space to the work the employer stresses, provided it reflects your real experience. If the vacancy focuses on preventive care, bring patient education and follow-up evidence nearer the top. If teamwork features prominently, show how you contributed to patient care with dental colleagues. For work focused on supporting the wider clinical team, compare the dental assistant CV guide, but do not imply dental hygiene responsibilities. Borrow accurate terminology from the advert, but do not repeat phrases mechanically or claim work you have not performed.

Write the personal statement last, once you know which evidence the CV contains. Keep it to a short paragraph that identifies your level, names two or three relevant strengths and offers a concrete reason to continue reading. The experience section must then prove those claims. A statement about careful follow-up, for example, is more convincing when a later bullet describes the caseload, review activity and recorded outcome.

The skills section should contain both technical and soft skills. Choose about 8–10 for a chronological CV; a combination format can accommodate up to 12 when the wider list is justified by evidence. Do not use this section as a substitute for examples. If you list periodontal monitoring, patient education or infection control, connect it to a role, placement or education entry elsewhere.

Record education using the precise title printed on your award documents. Add concise course detail only when it helps explain relevant preparation or compensates for limited work history. Keep additional information selective. A language used when communicating with patients may earn space; a long catalogue of unrelated interests probably will not.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Patient-focused dental hygiene professional with experience in preventive advice, periodontal monitoring and clear oral-health education. Works calmly with patients and dental colleagues, adapts explanations to individual needs and maintains accurate clinical records. Offers reliable follow-up backed by specific, verifiable evidence from practice and supervised placements.

Too generic

Hard-working dental hygienist seeking a position in a good practice. I have excellent communication skills, work well alone or with a team and can carry out normal duties. I am friendly, organised and passionate about helping people.

Writing your experience

Treat each bullet as proof of your contribution rather than a copy of the job description. A dependable pattern is: action verb + clinical or operational scope + result. The measure might be patient volume, completion rate, follow-up activity, an audit finding or a documented improvement. Choose a measure that you can verify and discuss without revealing confidential patient information.

Weak duty statementStronger evidence-led version
Gave oral-hygiene adviceDelivered tailored oral-hygiene instruction to 18–22 patients each week, with advice documented in every note reviewed during a placement audit
Helped with periodontal careMonitored periodontal changes across a supervised caseload of 45 patients and flagged 7 cases for clinician review
Followed infection-control proceduresCompleted daily decontamination checks across 3 surgeries for 12 weeks without a missed checklist entry

The numbers above illustrate how a bullet can communicate scale. Do not borrow them. Replace each figure with evidence from a placement log, appraisal, audit or another record you can defend.

Use verbs that identify what you did: assessed, monitored, recorded, delivered, adapted, reviewed, coordinated, referred, explained, implemented and improved. "Supported" is accurate for supervised or shared work, but repeated use can hide your individual contribution. A junior candidate can draw on clinical placements and relevant employment. Name the setting, make the level of supervision clear and explain the outcome. A more experienced candidate should prioritise broader caseloads, continuity of care, service improvements, team coordination or mentoring where these genuinely formed part of the role.

Useful evidence may cover personalised preventive advice, periodontal and soft-tissue assessment, removal of hard or soft deposits and stains through non-surgical treatment, changes recorded in periodontal health, treatment review, aftercare, infection-control procedures or management of clinical risks. Teamwork bullets can explain how you contributed to patient care, shared accurate referral information or gave colleagues constructive feedback. If referral or delegation formed part of the work, describe it only within the relevant scope of practice and your own competence.

Keep three to five bullets under recent, relevant positions and use fewer under older roles. Put the strongest result first. Mix clinical outcomes, patient communication and dependable processes instead of repeating patient counts in every line. During the final edit, ask three plain questions of each bullet: what did I do, on what scale, and what happened as a result? Delete any line that answers none of them.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order with the exact qualification title, institution and completion date. For a course in progress, show the expected completion date without presenting the award as completed. Early-career applicants can add one or two concise notes about relevant clinical preparation or a substantial project. Experienced applicants can usually shorten this detail because recent employment provides more direct evidence.

Preparation for UK Dental Hygienist practice can include extensive hands-on clinical dental hygiene work and study of anatomy, physiology, pathology and disease. It can also cover infection prevention, work safety, professional standards, communication, empathy and patient-centred care. These are descriptive features of preparation, not instructions to claim modules that do not appear in your course record. Use the wording on your transcript or supporting documents and select only details relevant to the vacancy.

Clinical, professional and interpersonal skills support safe and effective Dental Hygienist practice. On the CV, demonstrate them through concise course notes, placements and employment evidence rather than describing them as an eligibility rule.

The FdSc Dental Hygiene degree develops knowledge, skills and professional behaviours for Dental Hygienist practice. For progression towards practice after this degree, GDC approval from the General Dental Council is a conditional part of the route. Present the award and progression position accurately; do not suggest that completing the degree alone resolves that conditional step.

The BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy is a three-year, full-time professional degree for the dual Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist route. Retain the full title so readers do not mistake it for a different award or a single-role route.

Do not add a named certificate because it appears in job adverts. Include completed development only when you can give its exact title, provider and date. Avoid entries such as "various courses", which tell the reader little. When a vacancy requests a role-specific qualification, make your relevant awarded qualification easy to find and copy its wording exactly from your documents.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing duties such as "cleaned teeth" without showing the type of care, patient volume or result.

InsteadWrite each bullet around an action, its clinical scope and a defensible outcome, such as the number of appointments supported or improvement recorded at review.

  • AvoidUsing one generic dental hygiene CV for every vacancy.

InsteadMatch the wording to the advertised skills and experience, then place the most relevant evidence near the top. Keep every claim accurate and use only figures you can defend.

  • AvoidFilling the skills section with technical terms but leaving out communication and teamwork.

InsteadInclude both technical and soft skills, then prove the most important ones through patient-care and dental-team examples in the experience section.

  • AvoidClaiming periodontal procedures, radiography or infection-control work without showing where that experience was gained.

InsteadInclude these areas only when supported by experience, and connect them to a placement or role rather than presenting an unsupported keyword list.

  • AvoidDescribing patient education as a vague responsibility.

InsteadState the audience, advice given and follow-up evidence, such as delivering tailored plaque-control instruction and recording the response at review.

  • AvoidBurying recent clinical experience or qualifications beneath older, unrelated work.

InsteadUse reverse-chronological order so the reader sees the most recent work experience or qualification first.
